Omicron outbreak: List of countries where new COVID-19 variant has been detected

The new, potentially more contagious COVID-19 variant, which was initially detected in South Africa, has already spread to several other countries, prompting governments all around the world to try to stop it.

Furthermore, numerous nations have imposed travel restrictions on South Africa and its neighbours due to the threat of Omicron, a novel coronavirus strain.
The World Health Organization has recognised Omicron as a ‘variant of concern,’ and it will take several weeks to evaluate whether there are significant changes in transmissibility, severity, or ramifications for COVID-19 vaccines, testing, or other therapies.

Below mentioned are the countries that have confirmed cases of this new variant-

1. Australia

According to the Australian health authority, the COVID-19 Omicron strain was discovered in two travellers in Sydney. On a Qatar Airways flight from southern Africa, both passengers arrived in Australia through Doha.

Twelve passengers on the same trip from southern Africa did not test positive for COVID-19, but they were quarantined.

2. Italy

A person who travelled back from Mozambique and five members of their family have tested positive, including two school-aged children.

3. Germany

Two travellers who arrived in Germany from South Africa on November 24, 2021, were found to have the omicron variant. The specific tests have not been run yet but it has been confirmed by DPA, a very prominent German news agency, that it’s the same variant.

4. The Netherlands

61 Covid-19 cases have been detected among passengers who travelled from South Africa on Friday, according to Dutch health officials, with at least some of the infections being of the unusual omicron variety.

5. The United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, the Omicron variant has been discovered in two cases. The two cases of the unique strain detected in the UK, according to British health secretary Sajid Javid, were connected to travel to southern Africa.

6. Israel

On November 26, the country adopted several emergency measures after detecting a case of the novel Covid-19 strain.

According to the health ministry, the new strain, known as B.1.1.529, was discovered in a Malawian who had recently arrived in South Africa.

7. Hong Kong

Hong Kong became the second country to report two cases of the Omicron strain, following South Africa.

8. Botswana

Only one case of this variant has been confirmed in the country.

9. Belgium

One case of the new Omicron strain was detected in Belgium only yesterday.

There have been no cases of the Omicron variety in India thus far. Yesterday, two South Africans tested positive in Karnataka. They were, however, infected with the Delta variety rather than the novel Omicron strain.

10. Switzerland

The first case of COVID-19’s Omicron variant was detected in Switzerland on Monday.

The federal office for public health confirmed that the first case of this new variant is a person who returned from South Africa, around a week ago.
Testing will explain the situation in the next few days, according to the statement.

11. Canada

On Monday, Canada confirmed the country’s first two cases of the omicron COVID-19 strain, which were discovered in two adults who had just visited Nigeria.
